Founded in 1985, Alagappa University is a non-profit public higher education institution located in the urban setting of the small city of Karaikudi (population range of 50,000-249,999 inhabitants), Tamil Nadu.
Originated from Alagappa Arts College,  Alagappa Chettiar in 1947, it was established in 1985 by an Act of the Tamil Nadu government.
