Study permit Canada processing time

It is best to apply for a study permit as soon as you receive an acceptance letter from a Canadian college or university. A study permit can take up to three months to obtain.

Paper vs online application

APPLICATION ON PAPER

Step 1: Read the Instruction Guide and choose the country/territories from which you will apply in order to receive further instructions from your local visa office.

Step 2: Fill out the “Application for a Study Permit Made Outside of Canada (IMM 1294)” form.

After you’ve finished filling out the form, you must validate it. When your form has been validated, you will see “Validated” in the top right-hand corner, as well as bar codes at the bottom. This form must be printed, dated, and signed.

Step 3: Carefully review the “Document Checklist” and “Visa Office Instructions” to determine which documents you must provide to support your Study Permit application. (Hint: make sure you collect all documents from BOTH lists.)

Step 4: Pay the applicable fees. The application processing fee for a study permit is $150 CAD. To pay these fees online, you must have a credit card. You must print a “Official Receipt” and include it with your application package.

Step 5: Once you have completed your Study Permit application, you must send it by post (Tip: we recommend sending the application by courier or a method that can be tracked) or deliver it in person to your local Visa Application Centre (VAC). Your application will be forwarded to the Embassy or High Commission for processing by the VAC (Please note: VACs have their own additional processing fees, and forms to be completed).

Step 6: Wait for your Study Permit Letter of Introduction, which will be sent to you via email attachment or along with your passport when it is returned to you by the VAC.

When you arrive in Canada, you must show this letter to a Canadian Border Services agent, and your actual study permit will be issued to you. (Tip: Before leaving the immigration hall, double-check that your name, date of birth, and gender are all correct on your document, as well as that you have “on-campus and off-campus” work provisions in the Remarks section at the bottom.)

Continue after ensuring that your answers are correct. Step 7: Wait for your Study Permit Letter of Introduction to be emailed to you via your MyCIC account. Print this letter and present it to a Canadian Border Services Agent upon arrival in Canada to receive your actual Study Permit. (Tip: Before leaving the immigration hall, double-check that your name, date of birth, and gender are all correct on your document, as well as that you have “on-campus and off-campus” work provisions in the Remarks section at the bottom.)
