Brief description:

Outstanding postgraduate students from developing nations who are in need of financial assistance are given a small number of scholarships each year by the Aga Khan Foundation. Through a competitive application process, scholarships are given out on a 50% grant: 50% loan basis once a year.

Subject of study:

Although the Foundation is open to applications for Ph.D. programs, requests for Master’s level courses are given preference. Short-term course applications are not taken into consideration.

Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Canada*, Egypt, France*, India, Kenya, Kyrgyz Republic, Madagascar, Mozambique, Pakistan, Portugal*, Syria, Tajikistan, Tanzania, Uganda, and USA* nationals are among those who qualify.

*Note: In Canada, France, Portugal, and the United States, applications are accepted from people who are natives of one of the aforementioned poor nations, are interested in studies relevant to development, and have no other means of financing their education.

Scholarship worth, components, and length:

The Foundation only helps students with living and tuition expenses. Travel expenses are not covered by AKF scholarships.

For the full length of the degree program, scholarships for master’s studies are offered. Only the first two years of study are financially supported for Ph.D. programs; following that, students are expected to find other means of funding.

A 5% yearly service charge must be added to the scholarship’s loan portion, which makes up half of the total award. The loan agreement must have a guarantee as a co-signer. Five years are required for repayment, beginning six months following the Aga Khan Foundation-funded study time.

Only the qualified nationalities stated above who reside in a nation with a local Aga Khan Foundation (AKF), Aga Khan Education Services (AKES), or Aga Khan Education Board (AKEB) office that processes applications and conducts interviews are eligible to apply to the Foundation.

Age Limit

Preference is given to students under 30 years of age.
